Chopta, often referred to as the "Mini Switzerland of India," is a picturesque hill station nestled in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. It is an idyllic destination known for its lush meadows, dense forests, and stunning panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. Located at an altitude of around 2,680 meters, Chopta is the starting point for the famous Tungnath and Chandrashila trek.
Tungnath is home to one of the highest Shiva temples in the world, situated at an elevation of 3,680 meters. The trek to Tungnath begins from Chopta and is a moderate, 3.5 km ascent through a forested trail that offers spectacular views of snow-clad peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba. The ancient Tungnath Temple, believed to be over 1,000 years old, is a revered site for pilgrims, especially during the festival of Maha Shivaratri. It holds immense religious significance and is part of the Panch Kedar group of temples.
From Tungnath, a short but steep 1.5 km climb takes you to Chandrashila Peak, which stands at an altitude of 4,000 meters. The summit offers one of the most breathtaking 360-degree views of the Himalayan ranges. On a clear day, you can witness majestic peaks such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedarnath, and Chaukhamba. The name "Chandrashila" is derived from "Chandra," meaning moon, and "Shila," meaning rock, as it is believed to be the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating Ravana in the Ramayana.
The trek from Chopta to Tungnath and Chandrashila is a must-do for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The trail takes you through verdant meadows, alpine forests, and rugged terrain. Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful flora and fauna, including rhododendron, deodar trees, and a variety of birds and animals. The trek is most popular during the spring and summer months when the meadows are in full bloom, but it is also a favorite among trekkers during the winter season when the region is covered in snow, adding an entirely new dimension to the experience.
Whether you are visiting for spiritual reasons, adventure, or simply to immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes, Chopta, Tungnath, and Chandrashila offer a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and tranquility. This trek is a rewarding journey for those seeking a deeper connection with nature and the Himalayas.
